Facebook Farming Games: FarmVille, Farm Town, and (Lil) Farm Life

Farming, homesteading, and gardening have increased in popularity along with the trend of Green activity in the country currently. For those who don't own enough land to farm, vegetable gardens are the way to go. For those who can't plant outside, indoor pot planting is an option for some vegetables. And for those who don't have the space, time, or patience for growing plants in pots or elsewhere, there's FarmVille, Farm Town, (Lil) Farm Life, and other farming games on Facebook.com.

The most popular are FarmVille by Zynga, Farm Town by Slashkey, and (Lil) Farm Life by Green Patch Inc., with 28,556,516, 17,659,808, and 1,303,088 monthly active users, respectively. In each of these games, you get to choose and customize an avatar, and start farming the land you're given - a 12x12 plot. You'll get a few plowed patches with planted and possibly harvestable vegetables to start with. From there, you can plow more land, plant seeds, harvest the plants, sell the produce, buy buildings, fences, ponds, and other decorations, buy animals, buy trees that will continue to grow for multiple harvests, and become a qualified and respected high-level farmer. You can also visit your friend's farms to help them out, gaining some coins and experience along the way.

FarmVille and (Lil) Farm Life are very similar in look and feel, from the tools they have to how you use them. All three are extremely similar in look and play style, and you can do a lot of the same things on all of them. All three games allow for expansion of your farm up to 24x24. Farm Town was the first one introduced to me, and the first one I joined. It seems to me like a middle ground between the other two, having a good mix of lots of avatar customization and lots of farm land customization, plus having features the other two don't.

Farm Town is the only one of the three with rivers, paths, and flowers. They also have a marketplace and an inn, which you can visit to socialize with other users. The marketplace is where you can sell your produce and gifts, as well as hire other users to plow or harvest at your farm, or be hired by other users to work on their farm. While you can change your appearance at any time in any of the three games by clicking on your avatar, Farm Town is the only one that doesn't allow you to also change your gender.

FarmVille boasts the greatest customization for the physical aspects of your avatar, but only (Lil) Farm Life allows you to change your avatar's clothing. FarmVille also has the largest number of buyable items, but here also lies the greatest disadvantage. Some of their items can only be bought with Farm Cash. In all three games , you can spend real life money to get more coins (the common currency earned by selling produce, etc), however in FarmVille you can also spend real life money to get Farm Cash. So some items are only available to those who want to spend the real life money to get them.

FarmVille still has its other advantages: it is one of the two games that have ponds for sale (the other being Farm Town), and it has the nifty feature of being able to queue tasks. While your avatar starts plowing, seeding, or harvesting one field, or harvesting one tree, you can click on other fields or trees to be plowed, seeded, or harvested. The field or tree then becomes faded until the task there is completed. This makes for time efficient farming.

I personally think (Lil) Farm Life is the best for avatar customization, because you can not only change your avatar's physical features, but you can also change their clothing. This allows for a larger variety of possible combinations, even with fewer options for hair and facial features. (Lil) Farm Life, like FarmVille, allows for queueing tasks on your farm. Also, like other Green Patch Inc. applications, for every 10 gifts you send to friends, you save 1 square foot of rain forest! Farming AND saving the world - what could be better?

All three of these games have their advantages and disadvantages. Until I can decide which of the three I like best, I'll continue playing all of them. More of my Facebook friends have Farm Town than the other two, and more play FarmVille than (Lil) Farm Life. Farm Town, while having less avatar customization, offers the most play options, allowing you to do more than just care for your own farm. All three are great games, and it really depends on what you like to have in a Facebook farm game.

Comparing the games the way it was done, although great, totally missed the mark.

Farm Town is an Interactive Game, the other two mentioned are not, MyFarm (the leader) was not even mentioned, and (Lil) Farm Life is brand new PRE-BETA stage, can't even call it BETA yet with all of it's problems.

I hadn't heard of MyFarm before. When I did an apps search on Facebook, it didn't come up. I will definitely look into it, though.

I know (Lil) Farm Life is in its Beta, it reminds me every time the screen loads up. However I personally have not had any problems with it. As far as being brand-new, I suppose it depends on one's definition. I have been seeing ads for it on other Green Patch Inc. games for the past few weeks.

Thank you for the read and the comment. You've given me a few more things to check into.

Farm Town ROCKS!

I like farm town because i can inter-act with other people, can hire people friends or not to harvest or plow while in farmville you do it by yourself. I haven't try farm life and looking forward to try it. I also like farmpals coz the plants don't go to waste if you're not able to harvest it.

Thanks for the reads and comments, guys!

Just want to say that all these games are continuously being updated and added to. The info in this hub is only up to date at the time of publishing, and I can't gaurantee it's accuracy now or in the future. Today I noticed that FarmTown has implemented FarmCash, along with exclusive items that can only be purchased with FarmCash. FarmCash can be bought with real-life money, or earned in game.

Marose - I hadn't heard of or found farmpals before, I am looking forward to checking it out!

I like farm town the most, I can make beaches and waterfalls, can customize my farm more and you can showcase more your creativity here. After reaching the highest level, I moved to Farmville though but it's very tiring. I still play FT and I am looking for a game wherein you can interact with other users and hire others to help with your farm. Try Island paradise too, its nice.. farming in a island.. Ü

I love Farm town, was able to finish it last month but I still play it though I built my own restaurant now in Restaurant City. However, no other game can be compared to farm town as its the best for me as of now.

Hello there, what a lovely information about game

Thanks everyone for all the reads and comments!

AJ - the interactive option is one of the best features of Farm Town, I think, and is not common to a lot of other similar apps. I have started to play Island Paradise, and it is fun! I loved the Advent event they did over the course of December.

Alastair - Restaurant City has a lot of interesting aspects, but takes too much time to be successful, in my opinion. You should check out my hub on Facebook Restaurant Apps, Cafe World and Restaurant City.

rebekahELLE - If you've only left your farm alone and haven't visited it, it should be just a matter of going back to Farm Town. Do an app search on Facebook for Farm Town to get to it (make sure you are looking at Apps and not Pages or anything else). If you blocked Farm Town at some point, you can still visit the app the same way (doing the search) but will have to "allow" the app before you can play again. Your farm should still be saved, regardless.

And again, thanks to everyone else for reading and commenting!

Liked playing (Lil) Farm Life, but haven't been able to get it to load for several weeks. What's wrong????????

Sandy - I haven't actually played (Lil) Farm Life in a while; too few of my friends were playing, and that really kills a social media game. Unfortunately I don't know what's wrong with (Lil) Farm Life. It could be one of several things. You might check to see if the problem is on your end - make sure your flash player is up to date and you don't have any viruses or registry errors that could be affecting the app. There are sometimes connectivity issues with the servers the games are one. I haven't been able to get Farmville to load all day today. This could be happening at regular periods due to scheduled downtime or maintenance, which should be posted some place like a News section, or it could be caused by server errors, in which case there's not much you can do but report the problem to (Lil) Farm Life. There may also be communication problems between Facebook and (Lil) Farm Life, so it might help to contact Facebook about the issue as well as (Lil) Farm Life.

Thanks again to everyone for checking out the Hub! I removed the tables which were horrendously out of date, as wwell as adding a couple links. Let me know if you would like to see the tables back, and I will do my best to update them. It seems like these apps are adding new material daily, so any information about specific items I might post will likely become outdated again very quickly.

Thanks Dizzy for updating anyone who didn't know, and your experiences with these games. I too, started off with MyFarm which was incredibly lonely but very relaxing. Sadly too, none of my friends played it. I went so long at one time it appeared I was in 2nd place, (after not playing for almost a yr!)as having the largest, most expensive farm. I guess out of all the people I have befriended. Don't know how that was based. I just got bored eventually waiting on crops to grow. There was not much to choose from a year ago. Then I had already begun to play Farm Town, except it seemed expensive for certain items and very slow to rise in your level. Also I eventually quit playing it when they introduced the 2nd little farm, because it seemed like the developers jumped really fast on the notion and development of a factory, and producing items, selling and hiring to a much larger scale than just hiring a farmer! All those businesses and connections to increase goods was way to much like realty farming, and too complicated for me to keep up with. It was no longer fun! It was becoming a corporation! For that, I'll go into the farming business for real if I desired~but, I'd rather understand and keep up with the changes and be able to afford upgrades or items so I can also increase my level and move up. But, they jumped in to that upgrade so fast and incorporated all those new options and rules, changes, items, etc., that I was totally DIZZY!~ No, I felt totally confused, and hated it! too hard to keep up. I liked playing my other games too, and it was changing so much you practically had to stay on everyday, a lot! no...But I've started playing My Lil Farm and Farmville both when they first came out. And My Lil Farm was cute, and a lot of my friends played it, but they too have completely changed their format, rules, factories, businesses, to where it's too much time to keep up without it becoming a job. Farmville has been the one truly consistent game that, as they upgraded and improved, they gave you plenty of notices, they have so many forums, pages, and info to make this a game you can truly move up with and Keep up with at a pleasant pace. Plus their good at walking you through new changes as they emerge. I've been so pleased with their progression, development and success, that I have to say, for me, it's truly the best game out their for farming, and interacting with my friends. I love this game that I really have not played any of my others in so long, I'm lost on all their changes too. Thanks for your article on the games! Suzi
